Ivywood vineyard is situated along the ridgeline above the village of Freestone, heavily influencenced by the coastal winds and fog. I had driven by Ivywood for years, wondering who farmed it. One day in 2007, I was lucky enough to work with the fruit. I had gotten a call during harvest about some Merlot fruit in need of a home. When I heard the address, I immediately agreed to buy the fruit if they would graft the vineyard over to my favorite Chardonnay and Pinot Noir selections. It worked! Our first release is 2009 Pinot Noir from Calera and 115 vines. The Chardonnay will come into production in 2010!
Swicegood Vineyard is planted along one of the highest ridges of the Green Valley Russian River grape growing region, to delicate Dijon clones, 115 and 667. The vineyard is draped along the hillside facing the coast, filled with fog-filtered light. The thick 115 skins lend themselves to a carbonic maceration perfume, while the 667 provides silkiness on the palate. The fruit and perfume are framed in oak from a small cooperage in Burgundy- Chassin. I like the smokey, vanilla contrast to the more delicate fruity flavors.
